Ladies Club Competitions


Gladys Cayless Cup - Singles Stableford. Presented in 1964 by Mesdames A. Browning and Gladys Marlow and the Ladies Section. Given to encourage players to work hard to reduce their handicap. She would play with these members and help with her experience. Her handicap was 10 when she gave Gladys a game. Gladys felt this was a great privilege as her handicap, at the time, was 36

P. L. Baker - Qualifier for the P. L. Baker Trophy
T he top eight nett scores play singles knockout matchplay to determine winner of the Trophy. Presented by Mr Lytton-Baker in 1928.When won three times one kept the cup. Hilda Meadows won the competition three times and asked Mr Lytton-Baker to allow it to continue to be played for, he presented Hilda with a silver replica for her to keep.
 
Lady President's Charity Shield - The format is chosen by the Ladies President or Sponsor but is usually either Singles Stableford or Medal. It was first played for in 1986. The fees from this competition are donated to a charity chosen by the Lady President.

The Major Burnaby Trophy - Medal - played by ladies in silver division (0-20). Mrs Burnaby presented the Major Burnaby Trophy in 1935. Major Burnaby was Club President for many years. He and his wife visited the club most Saturday evenings to socialise with the members. They were real gentry living at Baggrave Hall. Frank Liddiard gave Mrs Burnaby regular lessons and was collected in a large American Lincoln Car carrying a footman and chauffeur, and on being driven to Baggrave Hall was met by another footman who delivered him to the door, where the Butler met him and escorted him to Mrs Burnaby.

Hilda Smith Trophy - Medal - played by ladies in bronze division (21-45). Trophy presented by Mrs Smith 1n 1938

A T Sharpe Cup - Flag Competition. The player puts a marker in the ground when she has used up all of her shots. The winner is the player who reaches the furthest point on the course. Presented by Mr & Mrs A. T. Sharp in 1928. They were the owners of the land of Scraptoft Golf Course.

Twelve Cup - Medal with twelve hidden holes.Presented by Mrs Bob Greaves in 1965. Her husband, who was Club Captain in 1945, would come to the club and draw out six holes. The winner is the player who has the best score on the twelve remaining holes. He also gave a bottle of spirit to be auctioned for the Ladies fund. Sadly the last gesture no longer exists.

Thomas Beedle Cup  - Foursomes Stoke Play ½ combined handicap. Presented in 1931 by Mrs L. Beedle (Birstall Sand & Gravel Pits). Trophy was originally presented in memory of Mrs Beadle's son. It was given to encourage ladies and played as a Singles Challenge Cup. The format was later changed to foursomes.

Ladies Championship - The Whyte Salver 36 holes medal. H/C limit 0 - 30 Started in 1974 by Mrs Margaret Goodwin, Lady Captain of that year, in memory of former club professional Jim Whyte, who died that same year. He was the Professional at Scraptoft Golf Club for approximately 23 years and at one time was not only Professional but Steward and Greenkeeper too, while his wife Mary was Stewardess. Sheila Cleaver, a current lady member, is Jim Whyte's daughter. Margaret Goodwin presented the Jim Whyte Salver for the Club Championship and Lois Newberry, Lady President of that year, presented the Whyte Rose Bowl for the best nett score.

Millennium Bowl Medal -  Handicap limit 0 – 30 Started in 2000, this trophy was presented by Doreen Brown. Doreen was Ladies Handicap Secretary at the time and still holds that position. The competition forms part of the Championship Day and was introduced to encourage support from ladies who no longer felt able to play 36 holes, but still wanted to be part of the Championship Day and also to encourage more people to the presentation dinner in honour of our new Ladies Club Champion.

Pewter Lady -  Singles Stableford - Handicap 31 - 45. Presented by Mrs Doreen Lawley in her Captain's year, 1993/4, to encourage 30 - 36* ladies to play in an 18 hole competition. The competition is now extended to include the new handicap range 31 - 45 and is also played on Championship Day.

Hillman Bowl - Par Competition The objective is to beat the course. A nett par will score 0, a nett bogey will score -, a nett birdie will score +. The winner is the player with the most + scores on the card. Presented by Mrs Olive Hillman in 1989.

Golden Jubilee Cup -  Fourball Betterball Stableford Presented by Mrs Paula Jinks in 1978, while she was the Ladies captain, to celebrate 50 years of Scraptoft Golf Club.

Iris Hutchinson Trophy - Medal Medal Presented by Ted Hutchinson in 1989 in memory of his wife Iris. Ted was the Club President from 1980 - 1982.

Veteran's Cup  - Age 60 or over) Singles Stableford for ladies age 60 and over. Presented by Mrs Gladys Marlow in 1969 to encourage ladies to carry on being competitive. Mrs Marlow was the Ladies President in 1965.

Hilda Randall Trophy Singles  - Stableford over 9 holes for ladies age 70 and over. Presented by Hilda Randall at the Ladies AGM in November 2000. She had held the post of Seniors Captain for some time and resigned from the role at that meeting. Sadly Hilda died in the spring before seeing her Trophy played for, for the first time in September 2001. She was a greatly loved character who never lost her enthusiasm for the game and had wonderful sense of humour.

Knockout Competitions

E. C. Young Singles Knockout Matchplay -Presented by Mrs Young in 1928.

Rabbits Cup - Singles Knockout Matchplay for ladies with a handicap in excess of 28. Presented in 1980 by Mrs Gladys Marlow. The original format was stableford over nine holes. It was changed to singles knockout matchplay in 2001.

Jeanne Chamberlain - Foursomes Foursomes Matchplay Knockout - High/Low handicap draw Jeanne, who was the Ladies Captain in 1973, was the instigator of the cup in 1984. The idea was to encourage high and low handicap players to team up together. Mrs Jackson and Mrs Gladys Marlow presented the trophies.
 
Winter Knockout - 9 holes matchplay.The trophy was presented by Mrs Gladys Marlow in 1965, in her President's year to help players get experience playing with others and to keep them playing through the winter.Players are drawn into groups. Each player has to play each member of the group they are drawn in. Group winner goes through to next round until a final decides the competition winner.

Officers Days - Lady Captain & Lady President Lady Captain's Day - usually played as a Medal but the Captain may change the format if she wishes. Lady President's Day - usually played as a Medal but the President may change the format if she wishes. On these days we have the biggest turnout of players to honour the Ladies Captain and Ladies President. Prizes are given for gross and nett winners plus divisional winners, past Captain/President, Veterans, and a variety of other prizes as decided by the Captain or President. The Lady Captain's Trophy and the Lady President's Trophy were both presented by Dorothy Davies in 1994 and are awarded to the player with the best nett score. Dorothy was the Ladies President in 1980. Mr Captain's Ladies Competition -usually played as a Medal format. Mr President's Ladies Competition -usually played as a Medal format. Professional's Ladies Competition - Format varies according to the Professional's wishes. These competitions form part of the celebrations of Mr Captains Day, Mr Presidents Day and the Professionals Day and are usually played in the week prior to the Official Day. Ladies Prize winners are expected to attend the presentations on the day of the Gentlemen's competition.
